“Garrett never hurried me. The first sessions were mostly about what I needed in the room, and that mattered more than I expected.”
Trauma therapy · EMDR · somatic work
Trauma work that starts with steadiness.
Therapy for adults living with the long effects of trauma. EMDR and body-based methods, at a pace you set, in New York or by video.

Through the Thorns
Some things are easier to carry when you are not facing them alone. The work here is slow on purpose: steadiness first, and the hard places only when you say you are ready.

Steadiness
We build steadiness first, before we go near anything hard.

Choice
You decide what we talk about, and you can say stop at any point.

Repair
We make room for rest and repair, at the pace your body sets.
I work slowly, and I say what comes next.
I'm Dr. Garrett Holt, a licensed psychologist who works with adults living with the effects of trauma that began early or went on for years.
Thorn Therapy is a solo practice in New York. I use EMDR and body-based methods, and I begin with steadiness: what helps you feel safe in the room, in your body and in your week.
You can say no, slow down or stop at any point. I tell you what we are about to do before we do it.

Areas of Focus
Where pain and the body meet. These are the things people most often come to work on.

Anxiety & Panic
A fast heart, a tight chest, a sense that something is about to happen. We start with what steadies you, then look at what sets it off.

Trauma & PTSD
The effects of one event or of years on guard. Preparation comes first; EMDR and Somatic Experiencing follow only if you want them.

Depression & Grief
Low, heavy stretches and loss. Small, doable steps, and room to talk about what you have lost.

Relationship Wounds
Patterns from early relationships that show up in closeness, conflict and trust. We look at how they work and try other ways of relating.

Identity & Transitions
Career shifts, coming out, becoming a parent, losing a role. Room for the in-between.

Burnout & Boundaries
The exhaustion of giving more than you have. We practice setting limits, with rest in the plan.
How We Begin
A clear path in, and nothing you have to decide in the first minute.
- 01
Step 1: You write to us
Tell us how and when to reach you. I reply on weekdays, and your fee is given in writing before we meet.
- 02
Step 2: The first sessions
We talk about what you want and what you would rather leave alone for now. No memory work yet.
- 03
Step 3: The work
Weekly sessions, starting with tools for the body and the week. When you say you are ready, we may begin EMDR or body-based processing, and you can slow it or stop at any point.
- 04
Step 4: Spacing out
As things steady, we space sessions out. You can come back whenever you like.

Rob C.Architect“He explained each step before we took it, so I never had to brace for a surprise.”
Aarti P.Product manager“The room is quiet and nothing in it asks anything of you. I could say 'not today' and be heard.”
Toni W.Nurse“I noticed how the sessions ended: we slowed down together before I left. I had not been given that before.”
Hideo N.Writer“Emails were answered plainly and kindly, and the fee was in writing before I booked.”
